OneDrive

OneDrive uses a one-time Microsoft sign-in - there are no keys to create.

Not recommended for most people. If you run the OneDrive app on your computers, it downloads every encrypted backup pack onto each of them, and stopping that takes a per-device “Choose folders” step (below). For a hands-off destination, prefer Google Drive (its backup folder is hidden and never syncs) or object storage such as Backblaze B2 or Cloudflare R2 (no desktop sync at all). Use OneDrive only if it is the storage you specifically want.

1. Set up the storage

Nothing to prepare in advance. You only need your Microsoft account.

2. Connect it in Nyx Backup

  1. New backup set > destination OneDrive.
  2. Choose Sign in with Microsoft and approve access.
  3. Save the set.

Nyx Backup stores only the access token, never your Microsoft password.

Once Test connection succeeds, set a schedule and retention, save the set, and choose Run now. Nyx Backup encrypts everything on your machine before upload, so this destination only ever holds encrypted blobs. Give each machine its own bucket or folder - see Connecting storage.

Tip: a personal and a work/school OneDrive are separate accounts - sign in with the one that holds the space you want to use.

Keep backups off your other computers

The Nyx Backup folder is a normal folder in your OneDrive, so any computer running the OneDrive app syncs the encrypted backup packs onto its disk. To stop a computer from downloading them, unsync just that folder - this keeps the cloud copy and removes only the local copy on that PC:

  1. OneDrive tray / menu-bar icon > gear icon > Settings.
  2. Account tab > Choose folders.
  3. Uncheck the Nyx Backup folder.
  4. OK. OneDrive deletes the local copy from this computer’s disk (freeing that space) and leaves the cloud copy intact.

Do this on each computer signed in to that OneDrive account. Nyx Backup uploads through the Microsoft Graph API and does not use the OneDrive app, so a computer without the app never downloads the packs in the first place.

Unsync - don’t delete

To take the backup off a device, use Choose folders above, or set the folder to “Free up space” (online-only). Both keep the cloud copy. Do not delete the synced folder from File Explorer / Finder while OneDrive is syncing it - that deletes it from the cloud too, and the cloud copy is your backup.
