Restoring files
Restoring is done right in the app - it is the main way you get your data back, and it is fast.
Browse and restore
- Open the Restore tab and pick the backup set.
- Choose a snapshot - a point in time. Each successful backup is its own snapshot, so you can go back to a file exactly as it was on a given day.
- Browse the file tree and select what to restore: a single file, a folder, or the whole snapshot.
- Choose where to put it - back to its original location, or a different folder so you can compare before replacing anything.
- Start the restore. Nyx Backup downloads only the chunks it needs, decrypts them on your machine, and rebuilds the files.
Searching
If you know the name but not where it lived, use the Search tab to find a file across snapshots, then restore it from the results.
Restoring to a different machine
Install Nyx Backup on the other machine, enter the same recovery passphrase, and point it at the same destination. Its snapshots appear in the Restore tab and you restore exactly as above. This is how you move to a new computer.
Cold storage (archive tiers)
If a set writes to an archive tier such as Amazon S3 Glacier, the data must be warmed before it can be read. Nyx Backup handles this for you: it requests a restore from the archive, waits for the objects to become available, and then downloads them. You can pick the retrieval speed (for example Standard or Bulk) and how long the warmed copy stays available. Warming can take minutes to hours depending on the tier and speed you choose - that is the storage provider’s timing, not the app’s.
Restore always works
Restoring is never blocked by your license state. Even if a trial or license has lapsed, you can always get your data back - through the app, or through the free Recovery Tool.
