Completely removing Nyx Backup

This page lists everything Nyx Backup leaves on your computer and how to remove it, per platform. It is written to be published as-is on nyxbackup.com/uninstall.

Uninstalling the app does not delete your backups. They stay in your storage (S3, Backblaze B2, OneDrive, etc.) and that provider keeps charging for them until you delete them from that provider’s console.

Removing the encryption key (below) means you can no longer restore your remote backups - it is the only thing that can decrypt them, and even the free Recovery Tool needs it. If you might ever want your data back, export the key first:

nyx_bkp_cli export-key --output nyxbackup-recovery-key.txt

Keep that file somewhere safe and offline.

Before removing anything, it is good practice to release your license seat so you can activate a new machine later:

nyx_bkp_cli license deactivate

Windows

1. Uninstall the app: Settings -> Apps -> Nyx Backup -> Uninstall (or Control Panel -> Programs and Features). This stops and removes the NyxBackupSvc service, the Start-menu shortcut, and the program files.

2. Delete the data folder (config, database, logs):

   • C:\ProgramData\NyxBackup\

3. Delete the stored secrets. These live in Windows Credential Manager under the SYSTEM account (the service created them), so they do not appear in your own Credential Manager UI. Remove them from a SYSTEM-context shell - e.g. with PsExec:

   PsExec -s cmd
   cmdkey /delete:nyxbackup.master_key
   cmdkey /delete:nyxbackup.license
   cmdkey /delete:nyxbackup.ep-0001.key_id
   cmdkey /delete:nyxbackup.ep-0001.secret

   (Repeat the ep-* lines for each destination you configured.) A one-command nyx_bkp_cli purge-credentials helper is planned to make this a single step.

Linux (.deb / .rpm)

• .deb: use purge to remove the app and its data in one step:

  sudo apt purge nyxbackup

  (Plain sudo apt remove nyxbackup keeps /etc/nyxbackup, /var/lib/nyxbackup, and the stored keys so you can reinstall without reconfiguring.)
• .rpm: sudo dnf remove nyxbackup removes the app but keeps data; delete it manually:

  sudo rm -rf /etc/nyxbackup /var/lib/nyxbackup /var/log/nyxbackup

• Either way, the runtime dir /run/nyxbackup/ clears itself on reboot.

macOS

macOS .pkg installers have no built-in uninstaller, so run these (Terminal):

(Endpoint credentials are stored as nyxbackup.ep-0001.key_id / .secret, etc.; remove each the same way if you configured multiple destinations.)

Your backups still exist in your storage provider. If you want them gone too, sign in to each provider’s console (AWS S3, Backblaze B2, Cloudflare R2, your WebDAV / SFTP server, OneDrive / Google Drive / Dropbox, etc.) and delete the NyxBackup bucket / folder there. Charges stop only once that data is deleted.
