Nyx Backup is not a first attempt. It is the distillation of everything learned running an online-backup service since 2005 - rebuilt from the ground up so that, this time, you own the storage, the keys, and the format.

Two decades of building backup software

Before Nyx there was AltDrive Online Backup, founded in 2005 and run for over a decade as a well-reviewed unlimited-backup service on hardware we owned and operated. It did the things that matter: a private security key, so that nobody - including us - could read your files; restore of any file at any time, including previous versions; and deduplication and compression for fast, light backups.

It also ran white-labelled: other companies resold AltDrive to their own small-business customers under their own branding.

We retired it in 2018. By then the hyperscalers - Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud - could sell storage by the gigabyte for less than it cost to run our own, and flat-rate unlimited had stopped making sense.

That shaped Nyx: it does not resell storage. Your backups go to an account you own, priced by what you actually use - and what a decade of running a service teaches about failed restores, surprise egress bills, and ransomware is built into the product.

Who builds it

A seasoned engineer from regulated, critical-systems software

Nyx is built by an engineer with a BSEE in Electrical and Computer Engineering and decades of software experience - much of it on critical applications in regulated industries, where correctness, auditability, and long-term reliability are not optional. A veteran of the backup industry and an independent developer who answers to users, not to outside investors. That background is why Nyx leans on vendor-validated FIPS crypto, a published and versioned archive format, and a restore path that never costs you anything: the same discipline you would expect from software that has to hold up under audit.

Built for you to own

Nobody should have to trust one company with the only copy of their life's data, or rent that company's cloud forever. Your backups go to storage you control - your own S3 bucket, your Backblaze account, your NAS - encrypted with keys that never leave your machine, in a format that is documented so your data stays recoverable long after any one app or company. Independent, self-funded, and privacy-first by design, not by press release.

Restores are the product

A backup you cannot restore is worthless. Nyx makes restore first-class - browsable snapshots, restore never gated by your license, and a separate free tool as a last-resort safety net.

You should never be locked in

Your storage, your keys, an open documented format. Walk away from Nyx and your data is still yours and still readable. That is the opposite of the rent-our-cloud model.
